TO PROTECT AND SERVE

I was watching an episode of my favorite television series LAW AND ORDER (SVU) one evening and it took my mind to a million places. The episode was about a mentally unstable man who decided to start killing cops. Some police officers watched their partners get shot in the head right in front of their eyes and couldn't do anything about it. They couldn't even find the shooter, which made some of them decide to quit. According to one of them "I would rather be a coward on the beach in Florida than become a dead cop".
The part that really struck me was the speech given to the officers in their precinct by their lieutenant, telling them that even though many people hate cops, and want them dead, they should never forget that their job is to protect and serve these same people. The speech ended with "please try and come back alive".

I found myself shedding a little tear because for the first time I really thought about the work that they do and asked myself if I could risk my life everyday knowing that half the people I am working hard to protect probably hate me. Just the way people hated Jesus even though he came to die for them to be saved.
That is not an easy pill to swallow but it is the truth.

We as a people are so used to generalizing that we forget there is a difference between good cops and bad cops.
It reminded me of a time when I was seriously thinking about walking away from the entertainment world to become a teacher. I could not understand how a person would give up so much just to entertain others, and put a smile on their faces when they need their spirits to be lifted; but get hate, trolls and slander every other day. It can be very hurtful and lead to depression but when I watched this episode I truly realized that what I thought I was facing was no where near what these cops are facing, especially here in America.

Yes there are bad eggs among them who are trigger happy and racist, but can we say that they are all the same? I don't think so.
These people leave their homes everyday without the assurance of coming back to their families. I am learning to appreciate the law enforcement agents more and more everyday because not everyone can do what they do.

Regardless of what we feel, let us all remember that some of these officers are really out to PROTECT AND SERVE us no matter what.

  1. I find this article, most exhilarating and profoundly touching.
Many times we all have felt a little miffed with the attitude of our law enforcement officers......But, aren't they the same people we turn to in an emergency!??

The part that hit me most and perhaps the most humbling part, is the reference to the intense and tasking job of being a performing Artiste, working ever so hard and drawing from the recesses, from the Inner being to Create, Recreate and bring to life such a performance to make us all Happy, confounded, shocked, and even cry.....yet, here comes a not too talented half informed critic who without as much as a thought, condemn such a beautiful effort, without as much as a care....

I shall from now on, always look out for your stories and articles...
    This is Class...!
    And I should know.
Thank you for the delivery and the content.

A decent effort, very professional. The blog's outline too, safely international....!

    Well Done, Stella.

  3. Once again Stella, your writing, analogies and level of intelligence is unquestionably beyond the stars. You know how I feel about first responders, cops, fire men, military operatives and basically every man or woman who puts on a uniform and risks his/her life for others. I could never do what they do and I do hope that even as peool point fingers of accusation daily, we should take a moment and say a prayer for them and their families.
What we do as entertainers, the heat we take and the trolling we deal with completely pales in comparison to what these people go through. I salute these men and woman.

  6. This reflection is truly moving. It's a testament to the complex and challenging nature of those who protect us, much like the paradox of love and rejection faced by historical figures like Jesus.
